The Story of an Hour
"The Story of an Hour" is written by the author Kate Chopin. The main
character of the story is Mrs. Mallard who is ill with the heart disease and is
struggling from the news of her husband's death. Josephine is her sister who told
her the bad news and Mrs. Mallard threatens herself and others.
From the Kate Chopin's characters always seek or look for freedom from
the society or even marriage. "The Story of an Hour" is basically a woman who
wanted a freedom from the marriage.
The main character Mrs. Mallard (Louise Mallard) was a pretty woman
when she was young. However, as the time flies everything heals and changes.
Mrs. Mallard has changed like everybody else, she is old and has a dull stare in her
eyes. The narrator also mentions that the main character Louise Mallard is afraid of
something. Mrs. Mallard was happy and sad at the same time. She was happy
because she is no longer under control of her husband or someone else. That's why
she said "Free! Body and Soul free!" She kept whispering that she is "free". She
was sad because she lost her husband and she needs his support. Still the main
character thinks that she would be the master of herself because now she has no one
to live for or serve for.
She was spending the days alone but one day her husband showed up. The
narrator made the main character to die from the shock. On the story says that she
was happy and died from the joy. Everything happened so quick and happened so
sudden. That is why the narrator made the end of the story as ironic as possible.
