The Story of an Hour

                                               The Story of an Hour

"The Story of an Hour" is written by the author Kate Chopin. The main

character of the story is Mrs. Mallard who is ill with the heart disease and is

struggling from the news of her husband's death. Josephine is her sister who told

her the bad news and Mrs. Mallard threatens herself and others.

From the Kate Chopin's characters always seek or look for freedom from

the society or even marriage. "The Story of an Hour" is basically a woman who

wanted a freedom from the marriage.

The main character Mrs. Mallard (Louise Mallard) was a pretty woman

when she was young. However, as the time flies everything heals and changes.

Mrs. Mallard has changed like everybody else, she is old and has a dull stare in her

eyes. The narrator also mentions that the main character Louise Mallard is afraid of

something. Mrs. Mallard was happy and sad at the same time. She was happy

because she is no longer under control of her husband or someone else. That's why

she said "Free! Body and Soul free!" She kept whispering that she is "free". She

was sad because she lost her husband and she needs his support. Still the main

character thinks that she would be the master of herself because now she has no one

to live for or serve for.
She was spending the days alone but one day her husband showed up. The

narrator made the main character to die from the shock. On the story says that she

was happy and died from the joy. Everything happened so quick and happened so

sudden. That is why the narrator made the end of the story as ironic as possible.

One way is to smash the head of the man,
who perpetrates injustice and to get your own
               head smashed in the process.

               Pride makes a victorious nation,
               Peace makes a better world.

No country has ever become, or will ever become,
               happy though the nation.
A nation does not rise that way; it only falls further.

(pg 244. from On Nonviolent Resistance)

If no one stands, then no one will,
If at least one stands, then some will.
"How can you advocate breaking some laws,
              and obeying others?"
The answer is there are just and unjust laws.
A just law is squares law of God.
An unjust law is a minority had no part in enacting.
People have rights and everyone must have rights.
It doesn't matter whether we are black, white,
              brown, or any other colors;
What matters is we are all human beings.

(pg 245-246. from Letter from Birmingham City Jail)

The character inherent in the American people,
              has done all that has been accomplished;
              It's better off to struggle,
              Instead of pleasing someone.
              Government is at best but an expedient;
              But most governments are inexpedient.
              Expedient would willingly succeed in letting one another alone;
Let every man make known that,
what kind of government would command his respect.
And that will be one step toward obtaining it.

(pg 236-237. from Resistance to Civil Government)

What is an American?

What is an American?

Saying American or being an American reminds everyone that it is a freedom or

being free. Living in America and being an American is like you have opportunities

almost in everything. An American is anyone who understands that to achieve the best in

life requires action, exertion, effort. People from different places come to the American

with many reasons. They might be seeking for a better life, or work condition to make

some money, or even leave their countries just to come here to get their children to be

educated. I have seen the difference between being here and being in your own country.

It is hard to be here and not to be here because you would have to leave your everything

in order to come here. As I think of now America reminds me of various types of people

like people that are from with different races, cultures, religions, and all the other

backgrounds. In my opinion people that live in America is not as patriotic as other

countries because America became like an international country. I think Americans must

stand up for themselves and not only think of themselves and not only think of

themselves, also others too.

There are many different ways to describe what an American is. People

have different opinions about it too. As I seek from the internet there are few definitions.

One of them says that "An American is anyone who loves life enough to want the best

that it has to offer". Americans usually look for liberties and what chances in everything.

In every histories say that the origin of America is the Native Americans, which

we do not see that many nowadays. An American is from the prosperous land in the

history of the world.

Another important thing of America is the immigrants. Immigrants are the people

who come here from different countries and they usually leave everything to have a better

life in America. Coming to the United States we must follow the rules, the laws, and

everything, in order to live in America properly. However, we still cannot forget who we

are, where we are from, and backgrounds. For immigrants, it is hard to live here because

they must work hard to afford their lives.

In America there is still racism seems going on but it definitely reduced as it was

back in the days. I saw people who respect others' religions and nationalities. However,

there are others who hate other races or even the immigrants.

For me, being an American must be respectful and welcoming. We must be

respectful because we are all human beings after all. I don't want to blame people who

come here and look for opportunities because they too, want to live like others. By being

on top of everything, of course it would make people to come here and have better lives.

America is a big example for others in every ways. We must take the goods and throw

the bad sides from everything, in this case from America.
